Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a subspecialty of both Dentistry and Medicine that deals specifically with problems of the teeth, jaws, oral cavity and surrounding structures.

In the past several years, the scope of this field has evolved with the demands of a growing population and an ever expanding technological world. Historically, the true scope of oral surgery has been almost exclusively within the realm of dentistry. For a variety of reasons, most patient referrals were garnered from dentists, with very little communication with medical doctors. With this new generation of dual qualified surgeons, however, the boundaries between these two fields are quickly dissolving. The oral surgeon now bridges the gap between Medicine and Dentistry, serving as a liason between these two major health care branches.
